I’ve been on this topic on booktube and book amino and…well anywhere concerning books because it is a real issue. People want diversity in their books and I get that, but honestly what I think they’re really asking for is quality.
What happened to reading quality books? Booktubers and publishing companies have started this bubble and cycle of promoting and publishing really under developed books.
I’m so tired and sick of wanting a community where I can discuss YA books that excite me and inspire me, only to find people talking about who they “ship” and which fictional character needs to end up with who by the end.
Is that really all we have to say about a book?!?! Fucking serious? Is there nothing else to discuss?
I grew up with Harry Potter. Yeah, I’m using this series as an example because it literally changed the world so if you have a problem with that crawl back under your rock where you can deny it’s greatness.
Harry Potter inspired DISCUSSION. As children, teens, and adults we DISCUSSED the book series, where it was going, the themes, what each book meant, how the game was being changed, the world. We looked for the clues that showed us our own lives were magical. and on top of that. WE became CREATIVE! Harry Potter inspired creation in us in so many different mediums and outlets.
What YA books on booktube are doing that?! Why are we talking about books that don’t do that? And don’t give me the “I like to read books for fun” thing because great books are fun. These books we see on booktube, the crappy books we call “fun reads” have all the potential of greatness, they just lack in a few areas that bring them up to par. All I’m asking is for these books to be Up To Par before they hit the sheleves. That’s not a lot to ask. In fact I’m just asking people to do their jobs and to do them with great expertise.
I’m not calling people or authors out. I’m just pointing out the fact that we should be asking and producing the best material we can with no excuses. That we need to be honest and or competent enough to see the difference between great novels and popular ones.
How can we call ourselves book lovers and readers if we don’t? And let me be clear, I’m not saying your preference of genre and writing style are in question. Great books come in many different forms and colors. Some are simplistic and some are complex and some are inbetween a great story is and always will be three simple things: 100% authentic in its character, plot and world. Thats it! The reason you love the story should be based on everything else: subject matter, writing style, voice, diction, etc.
So yes I did just say your favorite books means nothing in terms of what a great book is. Everyones favorite book should be great, what makes it our favorite should be preference not whether the book is competent in delevopment.
Do you giys get what I’m saying here?! Do you see why I’m siding eyeing booktube like nobodies business?!
Take a stand with me. As readers we need to demand that the stories that hit shelves be GREAT. Developed to it’s full potential. I can over look a few tiny arguable points…when when the character is 2D…how can we hold these books up like they represent greatness? No. Stop. We need to get it together because that is lame as fuck (#byefelicia).
So here is your chance. Take a stand. Because remember, if you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything.
Oh my god this is SO true! I grew up on YA fantasy, but I’m increasingly finding I very rarely buy ‘new’ books in the genre because more often than not they’re disappointing and underdeveloped. I’d rather just read Tamora Pierce (or, you know, other genres). I’m all for romantic relationships in books, but not if that’s THE ONLY plot point.
Yes! I’m like…I want to discuss books on my channel…YA books because that’s what I want to read right now…but with these ‘new’ releases, my reviews and discussions just turn onto “why this book needs another developmental edit”…
No one wants to listen to me tear apart books and it really puts a damper on reading for me.
I completely understand! I really enjoyed Ryan Graudin’s most recent books (Wolf by Wolf and Walled City), maybe give those a try?
I’ve seen that somewhere! I’m going to check it out from the library 😂 hopefully they don’t put me on a list for checking out half the library.
I 100% agree. I used to devour YA and now I will consider bio (a huge no no in the past) before YA because so much of it is poorly constructed fluff and many of the so called ‘plots’ are really just cover while the protag decides which guy/girl they want to hook up with. Eugh :/
Yes! I mean there is nothing wrong with romance…but not if it means you have no plot, no characters worth reading about, and the world is held together by scotch tape and post-it-notes. 😁
Exactly
It’s an older post, I know, but if you’re still taking recommendations (and you haven’t seen it yet), check out An Ember In The Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. It’s one of the few recent YA books that I’ve seen Harry Potter-esque fandom for… which might be because the romantic elements are so far on the backburner.
I’ve actually read this and have a video review here I LOVED this book and I’m eagerly awaiting the second one (^_^)!! Your right about the slow burner Romance that’s one of the things I loved about this book as well.
